What to Wear for Social Dancing: Classes, Socials and Festivals

Start with clothes you can move in comfortably. Try arm lifts, steps and turns before leaving home. Adapt your look to the venue, temperature and your preferred coverage.

Match the clothes to the occasion

For a class, choose an outfit you can repeat comfortably while learning. At a casual social, you might wear the same basics with a different colour, print or accessory. For a festival, think in sessions: workshops, dinner, parties and the journey home may need different layers or fresh tops.

Read the organiser information before choosing a look. A themed party and an ordinary practice night are different settings. If the venue has a dress code, work within it while keeping movement and your own coverage preferences in mind.

Try the whole outfit together

Raise both arms, take a few steps, turn and sit down in the complete outfit. Notice whether the neckline, sleeves or waistband need constant adjustment. Check the combination with the shoes you intend to wear, following the studio instructions.

You do not need separate clothing identities for leading and following. Choose pieces that work for the movements you are practising, and wear the expression you enjoy. Keep a fresh change accessible if a long evening usually leaves your top uncomfortable.
