What Makes Clothing Good for Dancing? Five Movement Checks

Choose clothes that feel comfortable while moving and need little adjustment. Check hems, sleeves and fastenings with your usual movements. Your style and coverage remain your choice.

Check what happens when you move

Begin with your arms. Lift them overhead and bring them back down without arranging the shirt afterward. Next, take comfortable side and forward steps. The waistband and trouser legs should permit the movement you are actually practising.

Turn slowly and notice the hem. Then sit down, stand up and check the neckline and coverage. These small checks tell you more about your chosen outfit than a photograph of someone else standing still.

Check contact and adjustment

If you dance with a partner, try familiar handholds with someone willing to help. Notice cuffs, long ties, jewellery and other details that obstruct either person. A relaxed garment can work well; the issue is what its fabric does during movement.

Finally, ask whether you keep adjusting anything. You may prefer a different length, cut or layer if the garment distracts you. A useful wardrobe is one you can enjoy repeatedly, so make the test with the actual item you intend to wear.
