Begin with everyday clothes that allow comfortable movement for a class or casual social. A tee and trousers are one option. Check event instructions and keep competition requirements separate.
Start with the room you are attending
Check whether you are going to a lesson, social or event with specific guidance. Follow the organiser’s footwear instructions separately. You do not need an entirely new wardrobe before your first class unless the school identifies a particular requirement.
Put together comfortable bottoms and a top you enjoy. Try familiar walking steps, changes of direction and comfortable arm movements. Notice anything that pulls, catches underfoot or needs repeated adjustment. Your choice of coverage and fit matters regardless of whether you lead or follow.
Check sleeves and removable layers
Very loose sleeves, hanging ties and a layer knotted around the waist can add fabric you may prefer to keep in a bag. Inspect them rather than assume every oversized garment is unsuitable. A removable zip layer can be convenient before and after class while leaving a simpler outfit underneath.
If you want a dance-message tee, compare the exact model’s width and length with one you already like wearing. Choose colour and print after checking the fit. Pack a spare top if you normally want a fresh change after activity, plus somewhere separate for worn clothing.
